What this is

Sagittarius is the ninth sign, mutable fire, the centaur-archer. It is Jupiter's domicile in his most exuberant register — philosophy, travel, the arrow drawn back toward a far target. It is the sign of the bigger question: what is all of this for?

What it governs

Sagittarius governs the wide-horizon season and the ninth 30° of the ecliptic; on the body it rules the hips, thighs and liver — the engine of forward motion and the organ Jupiter has always claimed. Jupiter rules here and Mercury is in detriment, so nit-picking detail loses to the larger frame. It presides over publishing, teaching, travel, study, and any work that requires rising above the immediate.

Its properties

Its colours are royal blue and purple, its metal tin, its stone turquoise or amethyst, its ruling number three. The upright gift is perspective, magnanimity, the inspiring overview that lifts people out of the weeds; the shadow is preaching, tactlessness, the pronouncement dropped without the footnote. A Sun here brings meaning-hunger back at the season's turn and punishes nit-picking. A Moon here roams — restless, optimistic, nourished by the unfamiliar street, giving every feeling a story by lunchtime. Mercury (in detriment) thinks in big frames, Venus falls for the traveller and teacher, Mars rides to the crusade for principle, Jupiter is in his own most expansive sign, and Saturn disciplines the vision toward the philosophy tested against the actual.

The archer is Chiron the wounded healer and the centaur teacher, Jupiter and the Egyptian Amun in his expansive face, the bow of every sky-god aimed at the far mark; the Tarot's Temperance pouring between vessels and the questing 8-9-10 of Wands. Cedar and clove, the horn blown in the distance, the choir's Alleluia: one note of the far horizon sounded down a long valley.
