Pisces

What this is

Pisces is the twelfth and final sign, mutable water, the two fishes bound and swimming opposite ways. Its traditional ruler is Jupiter and its modern ruler Neptune — expansion and dissolution together. It is the year's last water, the season of the porous self where what was separate begins to blend.

What it governs

Pisces governs the dissolution that closes the wheel and the twelfth 30° of the ecliptic; on the body it rules the feet, the lymphatic system, and the body taken as a whole. Jupiter rules traditionally and Neptune in the modern reading; Venus is exalted here at her highest expression while Mercury is in both detriment and fall, so linear analysis dissolves and compassion rises. It presides over art, music, retreat, grieving, mystical work, and endings well held.

Its properties

Its colours are sea-green and violet, its metal tin, its stone aquamarine or pearl, its ruling number three. The upright gift is compassion, the intuitive leap, the mercy that holds an ending; the shadow is escapism, the saviour-victim dance, the absorbing of another's chaos as one's own. A Sun here composts the year — endings, dreams, the shared edge between beings. A Moon here diffuses; the boundary between your feelings and everyone else's thins to nothing, beautiful in the right relationship and vertiginous otherwise. The two fishes are Aphrodite and Eros fled into the river as fish, the ichthys of the early church, the cosmic ocean of Nun from which Egypt's world arose, the all-dissolving and all-containing sea; the Tarot's Moon — the path through dream and reflection — and the fulfilled, dissolving 8-9-10 of Cups. Myrrh and lotus and seawater, the harp, the distant bell heard through fog: one note of the boundless heard at the edge of sleep.
