What this is

Libra is the seventh sign, cardinal air, the scales — the only sign whose emblem is an object rather than a creature. It opens at the autumn equinox with day and night equal, the Sun balanced on the threshold between hemispheres. It is Venus's airy domicile and Saturn's exaltation: the season of the other's face.

What it governs

Libra governs the equinox balance and the seventh 30° of the ecliptic; on the body it rules the kidneys, lower back and skin — the organs of balance and the body's outermost meeting-surface. Venus rules and Saturn is exalted here; Mars is in detriment and the Sun falls, so solitary force and self-assertion lose their ground. It presides over partnership, negotiation, contracts, and any work that depends on the meeting of two.

Its properties

Its colours are sky blue, pink and pale green, its metal copper, its stone opal or sapphire, its ruling number six. The upright virtue is fairness, grace, the partnership that feels like art; the shadow is indecision, conflict-avoidance, self-erasure for the sake of harmony. A Sun here is interested in the meeting between people rather than the taste of the fruit, and what is decided without the other's voice unravels by Scorpio. A Moon here needs the other person's face to feel stable and is fed by an arranged, beautiful surface. Mercury sits at a table for two and thinks by dialogue, Venus is in her air house mirror-loving, Mars (in detriment) fights by negotiation, Jupiter blesses partnership, and Saturn (exalted) masters through fairness — holding the scale steady even when his own interests sit on it.
