What this is

Capricorn is the tenth sign, cardinal earth, the sea-goat that climbs what cannot be climbed. It is Saturn's domicile and Mars's exaltation, opening at the winter solstice — the sign of structure, the long ascent, and what survives. It is not cold so much as patient.

What it governs

Capricorn governs the mountain season and the tenth 30° of the ecliptic; on the body it rules the knees, bones and joints — the load-bearing frame. Saturn rules and Mars is exalted here; the Moon is in detriment and Jupiter falls, so easy comfort and loose expansion give way to discipline. It presides over strategy, institution-building, and any long-arc project where authority is earned rather than granted.

Its properties

Its colours are black and charcoal, its metal lead, its stone jet or onyx, its ruling number eight. The upright virtue is endurance, responsibility, the love that takes the form of reliability; the shadow is coldness, workaholism as avoidance, melancholy hardening into cynicism. A Sun here builds by dates and rewards the second, third and fourth mile. A Moon here is in her detriment — restrained, capable, feelings demoted to data, soothed by the tick of a completed task. Mercury builds in stone and spends no word it must not, Venus (in fall) loves through the kept promise, Mars is exalted as the general who wins the long game, Jupiter (in fall) blesses the ten-year project rather than the flash, and Saturn is in his own sign at his deepest discipline.

The sea-goat is Sumer's Enki rising from the deep, Pan turned fish-tailed, Saturn-Kronos the old lord of time and the harvest's sickle, the lead that the alchemist calls Saturn; the Tarot's Devil — the chain that is also the structure — and the stewarding 2-3-4 of Pentacles. Myrrh and cold stone, the slow bell, the grandfather clock: one grave note struck on the mountain's own rock.
