What this is

Cancer is the fourth sign, cardinal water, the crab. It is the Moon's own domicile and opens at the summer solstice — the longest day belonging to the sign of the mother. Behind the hard shell is the tender meat: its softness is not weakness but the thing the armour protects.

What it governs

Cancer governs the tide season and the fourth 30° of the ecliptic; on the body it rules the chest, breasts and stomach — the seat of nourishment. The Moon rules here and Jupiter is exalted; Saturn is in detriment and Mars falls, so cold ambition and open aggression lose their grip. It presides over home, family, the ancestral, and everything that asks you to remember who you were before you performed.

Its properties

Its colour is silver and sea-green, its metal silver, its stone moonstone or pearl, its ruling number two. The upright virtue is care, belonging, the home that lasts; the shadow is the clinging claw, moodiness, the withdrawal into the shell at the first pinch. A Sun here lights from inside the shell and turns the season toward the kitchen, not the boardroom. A Moon here is at her deepest tides — everything more felt, memory surfacing, the mood of the room becoming yours. Mercury speaks from the kitchen in feeling-textures, Venus loves by feeding, Mars (in fall) fights for love not glory, Jupiter is exalted and smiles on tenderness, and Saturn (in detriment) teaches that home can be built even if it was not given.

Where else it appears

The Moon-mother wears many faces that are one face: Isis nursing Horus, Demeter grieving Persephone, Mary with the child, the crab that the Babylonians set at the solstice gate. Silver and the pearl, the lullaby and rain on a roof, the Tarot's Chariot drawn under its lunar canopy and the tender 2-3-4 of Cups — each is the same tide drawn up a different shore.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

On the Celestial Sphere, Cancer is a Sun-sign and a tenancy. A Sun in Cancer turns the dashboard homeward — cook the ancestral dish, tend the people who are yours. A Moon in Cancer (the Moon in her own sign) is the most lunar day of all; the Oracle reads heightened feeling and counsels nourishment as medicine, not indulgence. A planet in Cancer works through care, memory and shelter.

Why it matters

Cancer matters because everything that performs in the world first needs a place to be unguarded, and that place is what the crab defends. The sign asks you to feed and be fed, to remember, to let the ancestors cross through a shared meal. Home is where you are when you are not afraid.
