Aquarius

What this is

Aquarius is the eleventh sign, fixed air, the water-bearer who pours not water but the stream of knowledge and gift. Its traditional ruler is Saturn and its modern co-ruler Uranus, a combination that produces its signature: principle, vision, and a certain cool distance from the immediate. It sees systems where others see individuals.

What it governs

Aquarius governs the season of cold clarity and the eleventh 30° of the ecliptic; on the body it rules the ankles, shins and the circulatory system — the network that carries life to the whole. Saturn rules traditionally and Uranus in the modern reading; the Sun is in detriment, so the purely personal blaze gives way to the collective. It presides over reform, group projects, causes, and the architecture that will serve ten thousand people.

Its properties

Its colours are electric blue and silver, its metal lead, its stone amethyst or aquamarine, its ruling number eight. The upright virtue is fellowship, principle, the cool head in the middle of a fire; the shadow is aloofness, detachment that feels inhumane, principles that eclipse individual people. A Sun here produces the system that serves the many and puts friendship before romance, freedom before closeness. A Moon here stands back — in the room but watching the room, feelings observed rather than merged with.
