Therion

What this is

Therion is the Greek word for 'beast,' the title Crowley took for himself as 'The Great Beast 666.' In his wider Thelemic writing Therion is the solar generative force in flesh, the masculine counterpart to Babalon, the beast that the Scarlet Woman rides. The number 666, drawn from the Book of Revelation, is reread here as a solar number and 'the number of a man.' The manifest names him the Great Beast, the solar force in flesh.

What it governs

Within Thelema he presides over the masculine solar current, the force that is offered up to and carried by Babalon. He governs the active, generative power that finds its fulfilment in being given over to a great work, the strength that exists to be poured into something larger than itself.

Its properties

His colour is gold and his number 666, which Crowley computed as a solar number rather than a sign of evil. He answers to the solar-Tiphareth current as Babalon answers to Binah. The upright face of this principle is generative strength offered in service, the sun that gives its light to the whole; the shadow is force used for its own glorification, the self that wants to be worshipped. Read soberly, he is the masculine pole of a union, not a figure of menace.

Where else it appears

Therion is the solar generative force in a modern skin, the same note as the Hindu Shiva paired with Shakti, the alchemical sol joined to luna, the dying-and-rising sun-king of the old fertility rites, the Greek bridegroom of the sacred marriage. The pairing of an active sun and a receptive sea, beast and woman, is the hieros gamos, the sacred wedding found across the traditions. Set them side by side and the same generative union appears.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

On The Day, Therion is the Thelemic tradition-face of Tuesday. When he appears the day calls you to bring your full force to bear and to offer it toward something larger than yourself, rather than spending it on display. Read him as a call to generative effort given in service, the strength that earns its meaning by being poured out well.

Why it matters

He names the truth that force finds its meaning only in what it serves, that strength offered up is greater than strength kept for show. He matters because power without devotion turns hollow. He asks you to give your strength to something worthy of it.
