Set / Choronzon

What this is

Set / Choronzon is the figure the manifest names the Dweller in the Abyss. Set is the old Egyptian god of the desert, storm, and disorder, the slayer of Osiris and the necessary adversary of the divine order. Choronzon is the demon of dispersion and chaos that Crowley and Victor Neuburg recorded encountering in the Sahara in 1909 during the workings of The Vision and the Voice, named as the guardian of the great gulf, the Abyss, that the aspirant must cross to reach the supernal triad. Recorded here soberly as the tradition gives it, this is a figure of dissolution, not a thing to be courted.

What it governs

Within the Thelemic and Golden Dawn cosmology he presides over the Abyss, the gulf that separates the lower seven sephiroth from the three supernals, associated with the false sephirah Daath. His domain is dispersion, fragmentation, the scattering of the self into its contradictory parts. He governs the threshold of crisis where the old identity must be dissolved before anything beyond it can be reached.

Its properties

His number in Crowley's reckoning is 333, the number of dispersion, and his emblem the storm and the desert waste. The face this figure shows is almost wholly shadow: the chaos that scatters, the lie that masquerades as the self, the despair of the crossing. Read soberly, the tradition's teaching is not that one should seek him but that the work of growth eventually demands the dissolution of a false and partial self, and that this dissolution feels, from inside, like meeting him. He is the name the old books gave to the hardest passage.

Where else it appears

Set / Choronzon is the adversary-at-the-threshold in a modern skin, the same office as the Egyptian Apep the serpent of chaos that Ra must pass each night, the desert temptation that the prophets and hermits met in the wilderness, the demon at the bridge of every initiatory tale, the dark night of the soul of the Christian mystics. The figure who guards the crossing and must be passed, not defeated, recurs across the traditions. Set them together and the same necessary trial appears.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

On The Day, Set / Choronzon is the Thelemic tradition-face of Saturday, the day of Saturn and the threshold. When he appears the day may carry a sense of dissolution or scattering, of an old certainty coming apart. Read him not as a curse but as a marker: the day asks you to let a false or outworn self loosen its grip, to hold steady through fragmentation rather than clutching at the pieces. The crossing is passed by endurance, not by force.

Why it matters

He names the truth that real growth sometimes requires the breaking-down of what we took ourselves to be, and that the hardest passage is the one through our own dispersion. He matters because no one reaches the far side of a crisis without going through it. He asks you to hold steady when things come apart and to trust that the gulf is meant to be crossed.
