Aiwass

What this is

Aiwass is the name of the voice Crowley reported dictating Liber AL to him over the three days of April 1904, identified in his account as 'the minister of Hoor-paar-kraat.' Whether understood as a discarnate intelligence, his own higher self, or his Holy Guardian Angel, Aiwass occupies the role of the messenger through whom the text was given. The manifest names him Minister of Hoor-paar-kraat, the 93 Current, after the Greek value 93 that Thelemites attach to both Thelema (Will) and Agape (Love).

What it governs

Within the system he presides over the act of transmission itself, the carrying of the message from the silent god to the human scribe. As minister of Hoor-paar-kraat, the god of silence, he governs the moment where the inmost stillness becomes a word. He rules revelation, inspiration, and the channel through which a teaching is received rather than invented.

Its properties

His role is that of the intermediary, neither the source nor the recipient but the bridge between. He answers to the Mercurial-Air current of message and transmission. The upright face of this principle is genuine inspiration, the sense of receiving something larger than the self; its shadow, read soberly, is the danger of mistaking one's own voice for a higher one, or of surrendering judgement to a supposed authority. He stands for the discipline of listening as much as for the gift of being spoken to.

Where else it appears

Aiwass is the messenger-of-revelation in a modern skin, the same office as the angel Gabriel who dictates to the prophets, as the daimon of Socrates that counselled him, as Hermes the herald who carries the words of the gods to mortals, as the Holy Guardian Angel of the older grimoires whose knowledge and conversation is the magician's central aim. The figure of the intermediary spirit who delivers a teaching recurs across every revealed tradition. Set them together and the same channel of inspiration appears.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

On The Day, Aiwass is the Thelemic tradition-face of Wednesday, the day of Mercury and the messenger. When he appears the day favours listening, receiving, and transmission: pay attention to what arrives unbidden, write down the thought that comes from nowhere, carry a message faithfully. Read him as a day to be a good channel, alert to inspiration but careful to test it.

Why it matters

He names the truth that some of what matters most is received rather than made, and that receiving well is its own discipline. He matters because a closed ear hears no instruction. He asks you to listen with both openness and judgement.
