Samhuinn

What this is

Samhuinn is the last night of October, the hinge on which the Celtic year turns from the light half to the dark. The pastoral year folds here: the herds come down from the summer pasture, the harvest is in, and the work of the open season is done. It is the feast of the dead, the night the household keeps its beloved company at the table again. Of the eight stations it sits opposite Beltane, the two great fire-feasts that split the year between them.

What it governs

It presides over the threshold between the living and the dead, over ancestor-work and memorial, over endings honestly met. This is the night the Cailleach rises to rule the dark half, and the Morrígan walks the field. Its element is water, the medium of memory and of what lies beneath; its season is the gateway into winter. The hearth-fire is quenched and relit from the common bonfire, so the whole community holds one flame in common.

Its properties

Its colours are black and the deep red of dried blood; its work is done by black candle and by myrrh, the resin of grief and of the tomb. The apple belongs to it, cut across the equator to show the hidden pentagram of seeds, and the pomegranate, the fruit eaten in the underworld. Its upright virtue is honest remembrance: to greet the dead without dread and to let the year die cleanly. Its shadow is the refusal to grieve, the clinging that will not let the dead go down nor the season turn. The dumb supper is laid in silence, a place set for those who are gone, the meal eaten without a word.

Where else it appears

The same night wears many skins. Rome kept the Lemuria and the Parentalia to feed the family dead; Mexico keeps the Day of the Dead with its marigold altars and a plate left for the departed; the Church set All Souls' and All Hallows over the older feast, and the dumb supper is the same gesture as the bread broken for the souls in purgatory. Egypt laid offering-tables for the ka of the dead in the same spirit. In every skin the act is one: a place kept at the table, a fire kept burning, the living turning to face the gone.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Samhuinn surfaces on the Seasons section of the Oracle as the nearest sabbat through late October and into early November, the moment the Wheel shows you the gate of the dark half. When it stands as your nearest station, the reading is asking you to close something cleanly and to make room for memory. Read it as permission to grieve and to honour, not as omen of loss to fear. Lay one place for what you have lost; the table holds them still.

Why it matters

The year cannot turn to its rest until the dead are given their due, and you cannot begin again until you have finished honestly. Samhuinn asks you to face what is gone without flinching and to keep faith with it. To remember well is to keep the line unbroken.
