Imbolg

What this is

Imbolg is the first of February, the first stirring of spring under the snow. Its name carries the sense of ewes coming into milk: this is the feast of the returning milk and the new-born lambs, the first sign that the locked year is loosening. Brigid walks the threshold here, goddess of poetry, smithcraft, and healing, and after her the saint of the same name. It is the cross-quarter that stands opposite Lughnasadh, the promise of spring answering the first harvest.

What it governs

It presides over beginnings still hidden, over the kindling of the forge and the dedication of new work, over purification and the cleansing of what winter has stagnated. Its element is fire, the forge-flame and the candle-flame both. Brigid rules its three crafts, the made word, the worked metal, and the mended body, the threefold flame of the maker.

Its properties

Its colours are white and gold, the white of snow and milk and the gold of the rekindled flame. Its rite is to light every candle in the house, so the whole dwelling answers the returning light, and to weave Brigid's cross from rushes, a solar wheel of green reed. Milk is its offering. Its upright virtue is dedication, the naming and starting of a new working while it is still too early to see it grow. Its shadow is the hesitation that waits for certainty and so never begins. The forge is kindled before the iron is hot; that is the point.

Where else it appears

The feast of returning light and purification wears the same shape across the traditions. Rome kept the Lupercalia of purification in mid-February; the Church set Candlemas over Imbolg, the day the year's candles are blessed, and made Brigid a saint so the goddess could walk on. The Hebrew calendar keeps a new year of the trees, Tu BiShvat, when the sap first rises. In each skin the gesture is the same: light blessed and multiplied, the house cleansed, the first green honoured before the world can see it.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Imbolg surfaces on the Seasons section as the nearest sabbat through early February, when the Wheel shows the first crack in winter's hold. When it stands as your nearest station, the reading is telling you that something you cannot yet see is already beginning, and asking you to commit to it now. Read it as a green light for starting, not for waiting. Name the new work aloud and light a flame to it; that is enough to begin.

Why it matters

Spring begins underground, before any sign of it shows above the snow, and the year teaches that you must commit to growth while it is still invisible. Imbolg asks you to dedicate yourself to a making before you can be sure of it. The first stirring is real even when it cannot be seen.
