Wunjo

What this is

Wunjo is the eighth and final rune of Freyr's aett, and its name means joy, the settled gladness of a clan gathered and a feast well held. It belongs to Woden-Odin in his aspect as the bringer of right relationship. As the last stave of the first row, it is the fruit the seven runes before it ripen toward: not giddy pleasure but the deep contentment of belonging.

What it governs

Wunjo rules joy, harmony, and fellowship. It governs the well-being of a group bound by common purpose, the comfort of being among your own, and the fulfilment that comes when desire and circumstance align. It presides over morale, friendship, and the happiness that is shared rather than hoarded.

Its properties

Its quality is harmonious joy, and its colour is the warm yellow of a hearth-fire and a sunlit room; its number, eight, completes the first aett. Upright it is fellowship, a period of joy and harmonious relationships at hand, the clan at peace, and the gladness that binds people closer. Its shadow is alienation and sorrow, harmony that masks an underlying tension, the group fractured by discord. Wunjo reverses, and reversed it speaks of strife where there should be harmony and grief where there was hope.

Where else it appears

Wunjo glows the same note as the Sun card of the tarot, the unguarded happiness of a child in a garden, and as the Three of Cups, friends raising their glasses. Its harmony is the concord the Pythagoreans heard in well-tuned strings and the peace the Hebrew scriptures call shalom, wholeness shared among a people. Jupiter's blessing and Venus's pleasure both pour into this cup. Wherever a tradition crowns its teaching with the joy of a community made whole, Wunjo is the gladness in the room.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Wunjo surfaces in the Rune section as Rune of the Day or Rune of the Hour. Its arrival tilts your day toward gladness, good company, and the satisfaction of things coming together. Read it as a sign to enjoy what is going well and to draw closer to the people who are your own, and to let yourself receive happiness. Reversed, it warns that discord or loneliness is near, and asks you to mend a rift before it deepens.

Why it matters

Wunjo closes the first row because joy is what all the gathering and shaping is for. It asks you to recognise harmony when you have it and to protect it, since the deepest joy is the kind you share with others.
