Uruz

What this is

Uruz is the second rune of Freyr's aett, and its name is the aurochs, the great wild ox now extinct, taller at the shoulder than a man and impossible to truly tame, whose horn served as a drinking vessel in the royal halls. Where Fehu is the cattle penned and counted, Uruz is the beast still in the wild, raw strength that answers to no fence. It is the vital force in your body before it is shaped to any purpose.

What it governs

Uruz rules strength, health, and untamed vitality. It governs the deep physical force that drives growth and healing, the energy of the herd-bull and the will to endure. It presides over formation, the shaping of raw potential into a sound and capable body, and over the unconscious patterns that take form beyond your conscious control.

Its properties

Its quality is endurance and primal power, and its colour is the dark green of the forest depths where the aurochs grazed. Upright it is robust health, courage that does not flinch, the strength to break through what stands in the way, and a pattern forming beyond conscious will that you do well to trust. Its shadow is brutish strength without wisdom, force without aim, and a health crisis that reveals an underlying weakness. Uruz reverses, and reversed it warns of weakness or of strength turned destructive.

Where else it appears

The aurochs of Uruz lows the same note as the bull of Taurus, the Apis of Egypt, and the Mithraic bull whose slaying releases life into the world. It echoes the severity the Kabbalists place at Geburah and the active fire the alchemists called sulphur. The Strength card of the tarot, the maiden calmly closing the lion's jaws, is this rune's lesson in another picture: vitality mastered, not killed. Wherever a tradition names a great horned beast as the engine of life, Uruz is bellowing in it.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Uruz comes to you in the Rune section as Rune of the Day or Rune of the Hour. Its arrival turns your day toward vigour, stamina, and the courage to face something head-on. Read it as permission to act with full force and a reminder to direct that force, since raw power undirected becomes the very thing that wounds you. Reversed, it asks you to rest, restore, or stop spending strength on the wrong target.

Why it matters

Uruz stands second because once wealth is fed, the body that uses it must be strong. It asks you to honour your own vital force, to keep it healthy and to wield it with aim, knowing that strength is given to be governed, not worshipped.
