Mannaz

What this is

Mannaz is the fourth rune of Tyr's aett, and its name simply means man, the human being, humanity itself. It belongs to Mannus, the first man, and to Heimdall in his guise as Rig, the wanderer of the Rigsthula who fathered the human tribes. Its shape reads as two figures leaning together, the self set among others, the human in the web of human relations.

What it governs

Mannaz rules humanity, the self, and community. It governs intelligence and the rational mind, social order, the individual understood through their kin and society, and the divine pattern of the human reflected in each person. It presides over self-knowledge, cooperation, and the discovery of one's true role.

Its properties

Its quality is the social self, and its colour is the deep red of shared human blood, the kinship that binds. Upright it is the call to your highest human potential, the question of how you serve your community and what your divine purpose is, intelligence and self-awareness rightly used. Its shadow is the manipulation of others and the loss of individuality in the collective, the clever mind turned to betrayal or to destructive circles. Mannaz reverses, and reversed it warns of self-delusion or of cutting yourself off from the help you need.

Where else it appears

Mannaz reflects the same note as the Magician of the tarot in his command of mind, and as Heimdall, whose myth orders the human classes, and as the cosmic Anthropos of the Hermetic and Gnostic writers, the archetypal Man in whose image each person is shaped. The microcosm that mirrors the macrocosm, the human as a little world, is this rune in the philosophers' language. Mercury's intellect and the Sun's selfhood both think through this stave. Wherever a tradition sees the divine pattern written in the human and the human completed only in community, Mannaz is the figure of it.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Mannaz surfaces in the Rune section as Rune of the Day or Rune of the Hour. Its arrival tilts your day toward self-reflection, the use of your wits, and your dealings with other people. Read it as a call to know yourself honestly, to turn your attention to your highest potential, and to engage with your community rather than retreat from it. Reversed, it warns that you may be deceiving yourself or isolating yourself, and asks you to seek an outside view.

Why it matters

Mannaz stands fourth in the final row because its deepest lesson is what it is to be a person among persons. It asks you to see yourself clearly, to use your mind well, and to remember you are made human by the people you belong to, not apart from them.
