Jera

What this is

Jera is the fourth rune of Hagal's aett, and its name means year, the harvest, the full turn of the seasons. It belongs to Freyr and Freyja together, the vanir twins of fertility, and it pictures the wheel of the year as a single completed turn. It is the rune of completion through patience, the reward that comes in its own time and not before.

What it governs

Jera rules cycles, fruition, and reward earned over time. It governs the agricultural year, the long arc of cause leading slowly to effect, and the natural rhythm by which seed becomes plant becomes grain becomes seed again. It presides over harvest in every sense, the gathering-in of what was patiently sown.

Its properties

Its quality is fruitful cycle, and because it depicts a turning that has no upside or downside it has no reversed meaning; the wheel turns the same in all directions. Its colour is the ripe gold of standing wheat, and its number, twelve, matches the months whose round it names. Upright and unreversible, it is the harvest arriving, what you have sown faithfully now bearing fruit, the law that you reap what and when you have sown. Its harder face, held within the meaning, is the impatience that destroys the harvest by refusing to work within natural timing.

Where else it appears

Jera turns the same note as the Wheel of Fortune in the tarot, the great round that lifts and lowers all things in their time, and as Saturn in his older guise as Kronos, the god of time and harvest who carries the scythe. Its cycle of sowing and reaping is the karma of the eastern wheel and the parable of the seed in the gospels. The turning year the Bronze Age sun-wheels marked is the same year Jera names. Wherever a tradition teaches that the universe keeps faith with patient labour and returns it in season, Jera is the harvest brought in.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Jera surfaces in the Rune section as Rune of the Day or Rune of the Hour. Its arrival tilts your day toward results that are ripening, the long-awaited paying off, and the assurance that earlier effort is bearing fruit. Read it as a sign to gather what is ready and to trust the timing of what is not yet; cycles cannot be rushed. Because it never reverses, it brings no warning of failure, only the reminder that you cannot hurry a harvest.

Why it matters

Jera sits near the centre of the row as a hinge: the testing of the second aett begins to turn back toward reward. It asks you to keep faith with slow processes, to do the work and then to wait, knowing the year will turn and give back what you put in.
