Fehu

What this is

Fehu is the first rune of the Elder Futhark and the opening stave of Freyr's aett, the eight runes given to the vanir. Its name means cattle, the oldest portable wealth, the herd you could drive from one valley to the next. It belongs to Freyja, whose golden cattle were the original moving riches, and it opens the whole row because wealth is the first thing that flows and the first thing that asks to be managed.

What it governs

Fehu rules movable wealth, livelihood, and the spark that starts a venture. It governs earning and spending, resources that flow rather than sit, and the vital force that animates a new enterprise. As a vanic rune it presides over fertility turned into yield, the field that pays for the work you put in.

Its properties

Its quality is increase under stewardship rather than hoarding, and its colour is the red-gold of a coin freshly struck, red being the heat of desire that money carries. Upright it is prosperity earned and kept in motion, generosity that returns to the giver, the spark of a beginning that feeds itself: new financial or creative projects sending their energy outward. Its shadow is greed, the clutched fist, loss through hoarding, and the cowardice that lets opportunity pass. Fehu reverses, and reversed it speaks of what slips through the fingers.

Where else it appears

The cattle-wealth of Fehu is the same note sounded by the bull-coin of the ancient Mediterranean, where the word for money grew from the word for herd. It rhymes with the Hebrew letter Aleph, the ox that opens that alphabet, and with the Empress and the Wheel of Fortune in the tarot, who turn raw fertility into fortune. Freyja's wealth-spark is Venus's love of beautiful things and Jupiter's largesse seen from another side. The herd that multiplies and the goddess who makes the field bear are one motion in different skins.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Fehu appears in the Rune section of your dashboard, as Rune of the Day or Rune of the Hour. When it surfaces, your day tilts toward resources, work, and what you can build with what you already hold. Read it as a green light for beginnings that pay their way and a quiet warning to keep what you gain moving rather than clenched. If it falls reversed in a spread, ask where you are losing, leaking, or grasping.

Why it matters

Fehu opens the row because nothing else can be tended until the first thing is fed. It asks you to treat wealth as a flock that needs both gathering and releasing, and reminds you that the spark which starts a thing is yours to keep alive or let gutter.
