Eiwaz

What this is

Eiwaz is the fifth rune of Hagal's aett, and its name is the yew, the evergreen tree of the graveyard whose wood made the great bows. It is Yggdrasil itself, the World Tree on which Odin hung, the axis whose roots reach into death and whose crown stands in the light, sometimes given to Ullr the archer-god. It is the rune of the spine that runs from the underworld to the heavens.

What it governs

Eiwaz rules the axis between worlds, endurance, and the passage of death into rebirth. It governs the vertical thread joining the realms, the steadfastness of the deep-rooted tree, and the threshold where one state of being yields to another. It presides over initiation, the controlled descent and return, and contact between worlds.

Its properties

Its quality is enduring transformation, and its colour is the dark evergreen of the yew that lives a thousand years; tradition holds all the elements meet along its trunk. Upright it is endurance under strain, the firm spine, standing at the axis of worlds where death, transformation, and eternal life are all present at once: the moment of initiation. Its shadow is confusion between the realms and loss of grounding during spiritual work. Eiwaz reverses, and reversed it warns of obstruction or of clinging to what must be released.

Where else it appears

Eiwaz roots the same note as the Death card of the tarot, the rider who is not an ending but a turning, and as the world-axis named in every cosmology, the cosmic tree of the Siberian shamans and the pillar of the Egyptian sky. Its yew is the cypress and cedar of the graveyards, the tree that guards the dead in many lands. Saturn's threshold and Mercury's guidance of souls both pass along this trunk. Wherever a tradition pictures a great tree joining the worlds and a passage of death that leads to life, Eiwaz is the axis of it.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Eiwaz appears in the Rune section as Rune of the Day or Rune of the Hour. When it surfaces, your day stands at a threshold; something is ending so that something can begin, and your task is to hold steady through the turn. Read it as a call to endurance and reassurance that the passage, though hard, is protected. Reversed, it warns of being stuck at the threshold or resisting a change the deeper self already knows is due.

Why it matters

Eiwaz stands fifth in the testing row because endurance through transformation is the hardest test of all. It asks you to be the deep-rooted tree, to let what must die fall away, and to trust the axis that runs through you from the dark roots to the high crown.
