What this is

Dagaz is the seventh rune of Tyr's aett, and its name is day, specifically the dawn, the threshold moment when night turns to light. It belongs to Baldr, the shining god, and also to Odin. Its shape, two triangles meeting at a point, pictures the meeting of darkness and light, the moment between night and day that belongs to neither and both. It is the rune of breakthrough, awakening, and sudden illumination.

What it governs

Dagaz rules dawn, awakening, and breakthrough. It governs the turning point where one state gives way to another, the moment of clarity that changes everything, hope and new perspective, and the reconciliation of opposites in a single instant of light. It presides over the threshold between night and day and over the awakening of awareness itself.

Its properties

Its quality is dawning transformation, and because it depicts a perfect balance of dark and light meeting at a point it has no reversed meaning; the dawn comes the same wherever the stave lies. Its colour is the rose-gold of first light. Upright and unreversible, it is a breakthrough moment at hand, the paradox resolving, darkness and light shown as one at the horizon, awakening and renewed hope. Its harder face, held within the meaning, is being blinded by sudden light or the transition coming too fast to absorb.

Where else it appears

Dagaz dawns the same note as the Sun and the World cards of the tarot, the one all radiance and the other the completion that returns to a beginning, and as every dawn-deity the world has greeted, the Greek Eos, the Vedic Ushas, the rising disc of Egypt. The meeting of dark and light at a point is the union of opposites the alchemists called the coniunctio, and the day the lord makes in the Psalms. The Sun's light and the awakening the mystics name enlightenment both break through this stave. Wherever a tradition makes the dawn the image of awakening and the joining of opposites in one light, Dagaz is the threshold of it.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Dagaz surfaces in the Rune section as Rune of the Day or Rune of the Hour. Its arrival tilts your day toward breakthrough, fresh clarity, and the hopeful turning of a corner; what was stuck begins to move and what was dark begins to lighten. Read it as a sign that a transformation is at hand and a new perspective is opening. Because it never reverses, it brings no warning of failure; it asks only that you greet the dawn when it comes and trust the turning even before the full light shows.

Why it matters

Dagaz marks the great turning of the row, and as the wheel comes round it opens it again, because the runes end not in a final state but in a new dawn. It asks you to trust the breakthrough, to hold to hope through the dark hour before it, and to know every ending the runes have taught is also the threshold of a new day.
