Berkano

What this is

Berkano is the second rune of Tyr's aett, and its name is the birch, the first tree to colonise bare ground and so the mother of the forest. It belongs to Frigg and to Berchta, the mothering goddesses, and its shape suggests the swelling breast or belly. Its whole meaning gathers there: birth, nurture, the quiet green power that brings new life into the world.

What it governs

Berkano rules birth, growth, and nurture. It governs fertility of body and of project, the protective and feeding care that lets a new thing survive, and the cycles of the feminine and the earth. It presides over the home and the family, the cradle and the garden bed, the place where life is sheltered while it is still too tender to stand alone.

Its properties

Its quality is nurturing growth, and its colour is the fresh green of the first birch leaves and the white of the birch bark. Upright it is new life stirring beneath the surface, the call to nurture what is fragile and new, regeneration already underway. Its shadow is overprotection that stifles growth and an inability to give birth to new forms, care that smothers rather than frees. Berkano reverses, and reversed it warns of blocked growth, domestic discord, or a beginning that fails to take root.

Where else it appears

Berkano grows the same note as the Empress of the tarot, the great mother enthroned amid her ripening fields, and as every mother-goddess the world has knelt to: Frigg and Freyja of the North, Demeter and her grain, Isis with the infant at her breast. The birch as the tree of the goddess is the same sacred maternal tree other lands found in the linden or the palm. Venus's love and the Moon's tides of growth both quicken here. Wherever a tradition honours the power that gives birth and feeds the young, Berkano is the green of it.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Berkano surfaces in the Rune section as Rune of the Day or Rune of the Hour. Its arrival tilts your day toward beginnings, nurture, and matters of home and family; something new wants to be born or tended. Read it as a sign to nourish a fresh start and to care for what is still growing. Reversed, it warns that growth is blocked or that the home-ground needs attention before anything new can take.

Why it matters

Berkano stands second in the final row because a just society must first be born and fed before it can stand. It asks you to nurture beginnings with patience, to shelter what is fragile, and to remember that all great things begin as something small that someone chose to keep alive.
