Algiz

What this is

Algiz is the seventh rune of Hagal's aett, read as the elk-sedge, the sharp marsh-grass that wounds the careless hand, or as the elk's antlers raised against attack. It belongs to Heimdall, the watcher at the rainbow bridge Bifrost, whose horn Gjallarhorn will sound at Ragnarok. Its shape is an upraised figure, arms lifted to the sky, the gesture of warding and of reaching toward the divine.

What it governs

Algiz rules protection, sanctuary, and the connection to the divine. It governs the warded space, the guardian instinct, the antlers raised against attack, and the upward channel by which the human reaches the gods and the gods reach down. It presides over the higher self and the sacred boundary that keeps harm out.

Its properties

Its quality is divine protection, and its colour is the gold of the sun toward which its arms reach, sometimes the rainbow of the bridge; air and water meet along it. Upright it is being protected by higher powers, awareness extended upward into spirit and downward into instinct at once, and the warding that is the most protective of all the runes. Its shadow is a hidden vulnerability that opens at the very moment you feel most protected. Algiz reverses, and reversed it warns that your defences are weak or a threat is closer than it looks.

Where else it appears

Algiz raises the same note as the guardian angel of the western traditions and the warding gesture of the orant figure in early Christian art, hands lifted in prayer and protection. Its upward reach is the bridge the eastern schools build between the lower self and the higher, and the rainbow Bifrost that joins earth to the home of the gods. The Sun's guardianship and the holy guardian named in the western magical orders both shine through this stave. Wherever a tradition pictures a being who shields the soul and a channel raised toward the divine, Algiz is the figure with its arms in the air.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Algiz appears in the Rune section as Rune of the Day or Rune of the Hour. When it surfaces, your day is shielded; protection is available and your link to higher guidance is open if you raise yourself toward it. Read it as a sign you are watched over and a prompt to extend your awareness both up into spirit and down into instinct. Reversed, it warns that you are exposed, that a guard has slipped, and that you should attend to your safety and your boundaries.

Why it matters

Algiz stands seventh in the testing row because after surrendering to fate you need the protection that lets you stand again. It asks you to raise yourself toward what is higher and to ward what is precious, knowing that to reach upward and to defend below are the same gesture.
