Mercury
What this is
Mercury is the quick one, never far from the Sun, the planet of the crossing-point and the messenger between worlds. He is mind in motion: speech, writing, trade, the connecting thread that runs between every other thing. Of all the wanderers he is the most changeable, taking the colour of whatever he stands beside, and on the Tree he is Hod, where divine wisdom first takes structured form as language and magical formula.
What it governs
He rules Wednesday — the day of Woden, the wandering wisdom-god set in Mercury's place — and the planetary hours that carry his note through the week. His sphere is Hod, Splendour; his signs are Gemini and Virgo; his element shifts between air and earth. In a life he governs thought and language, learning and commerce, travel and messages, the hands and the nerves, and every place where two things must be joined or translated.
Its properties
His colour is mixed and shifting, orange shot with violet; his metal is quicksilver, the only metal that runs; his stones are opal, agate, and citrine. His number is eight, from the kamea whose magic constant is 260. The incense is storax, mastic, and lavender, the plants lavender, fennel, dill, clover, and hazel. Upright he is clarity, eloquence, the nimble mind that finds the link others miss. His shadow is Taphthartharath, the unchecked tongue — deceit, manipulation, cleverness without conscience, the silver-tongued con, information cut loose from wisdom.
Where else it appears
Hermes runs the Greek roads with winged feet, guide of souls and patron of merchants and thieves alike, and Egypt knew him as Thoth, scribe of the gods and inventor of writing, until the two fused into Hermes Trismegistus whose name still marks the whole hermetic art. The North sets Odin in the same seat — won the runes by hanging on the world-tree — with Loki's mischief at the edge of it. On the Tree he is Hod, where Raphael, God-heals, presides at the East over medicine and the spoken word. Write a word with intent, speak a name to carry a thing across, trust a message to the wind: every scribe and herald has worked the one art, and its hermetic key is Correspondence — as above, so below.
Where you meet it on the Oracle
Mercury sits on the spine through The Day surface, ruling Wednesday and turning the whole day toward thought, words, and exchange. He recurs as a planetary hour across the week, and his hour marks a window for study, writing, negotiation, signing, sending — anything that lives in language and connection. When Mercury comes up for you, read it as a day to think clearly and speak plainly, to learn or to teach, to mend what is broken in communication, and to move quickly while the road is open, keeping the cleverness honest.
Why it matters
He is so because nothing connects itself; meaning has to be carried, and Mercury is the figure of that carrying. He matters because the whole web of a life is held together by understanding and exchange, and when the messenger stalls everything loses touch. What he asks is that you keep your word true and your mind supple — that you use the gift of language to join, not to deceive.
