What this is

Mars is the red wanderer, the planet of edge and impact, the force that cuts and forges. He is the energy that pushes against resistance, the one star whose colour told the ancients at a glance what he was. Where the Sun gives life Mars defends it; on the Tree he is Geburah, the cleansing fire on the Pillar of Severity, the surgeon's necessary cut.

What it governs

He rules Tuesday — the day that in English still wears the name of Tiw, the war-god set in Mars's seat — and the planetary hours that sound his note across the week. His sphere is Geburah, Severity and Strength; his signs are Aries and Scorpio; his element is fire. In a life he governs courage and will, anger and conflict, surgery and iron, the muscle and the drive, and the necessary force that clears away what cannot stand.

Its properties

His colour is scarlet, his metal iron — the metal of weapon and of blood — his stones ruby, bloodstone, and garnet; his number is five, from the kamea whose magic constant is 65 and whose whole sums to 325. The incense is dragon's blood and tobacco, the plants thistle, nettle, wormwood, and pepper. Upright he is courage, vigour, the honest fight, the discipline that says no and means it. His shadow is Barzabel, the unchecked fire — rage, blind violence, recklessness, the wound that will not heal, the bully who mistakes breaking for strength.

Where else it appears

Ares storms hot and reckless through the Greek poems; Egypt sets the same red force in Sekhmet, the lion-headed lady of war and plague and healing both; the North gives Tyr, the colder courage that gives up a hand to bind the wolf; the Celts keep the Morrigan, crow over the battlefield. On the Tree he is Geburah, where Kamael, Captain of the Hosts of War, wields the sword — paired at the lower octave with Samael. Heat a piece of iron, sharpen a blade with intent, strike the ground and name what you will not let stand: warrior after warrior across every age has worked the one rite. The hermetic word is Polarity — even the extremes can be reconciled.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Mars belongs to the spine through The Day surface, where he rules Tuesday and tilts the whole day toward decision, defence, and the clean cut. He recurs as a planetary hour through the week, and when his hour opens it marks a window for confrontation, exertion, protection, and the ending of something. When Mars comes up in your reading, take it as a day to do the hard thing you have been avoiding, to set a boundary, to spend the body, to fight only the fight that is truly yours — and to watch that the heat serves you rather than runs you.

Why it matters

He is so because a life that cannot defend itself is not long for the world, and growth needs pruning as much as it needs sun. Mars matters because some things only force will move, and some limits only a clear no will hold. What he asks is that you learn the difference between strength and cruelty, and choose the one fight worth fighting rather than every fight on offer.
