What this is

Jupiter is the great benefic, the largest of the wandering lights and the most open-handed. He is expansion itself — growth, abundance, mercy, the wide view that takes in the whole and judges with grace. Where Saturn draws the line Jupiter widens the circle; on the Tree he is Chesed, the architect's sphere of mercy, overflowing wisdom ordered into kingly governance.

What it governs

He rules Thursday — Thor's day, the thunder-god the North set in Jupiter's seat — and the planetary hours that ring his note through the week. His sphere is Chesed, Mercy; his signs are Sagittarius and Pisces; his element is air leaning to fire. In a life he governs fortune and increase, law and philosophy, teachers and patrons, generosity, far travel, and the optimism that lets a thing grow large.

His colour is royal blue and purple, his metal tin, his stones sapphire, lapis lazuli, and amethyst; his number is four, from the kamea whose magic constant is 34. The incense is cedar, nutmeg, and saffron, the plants sage, hyssop, oak, clove, and agrimony. Upright he is generosity, faith, mercy, the broad wisdom that forgives and the luck that comes to the open hand. His shadow is Hismael, the bloat that follows abundance — excess, indulgence, fanaticism, the king who outgrows his court, growth with no shape to hold it.

Zeus rules the Greek heaven with the thunderbolt and the law of hospitality; the North roars him out as Thor, friend of the common folk, whose hammer hallows; Egypt swells Amun into Amun-Ra, the hidden one grown to king of the gods; the Celts keep the Dagda, the good god with his cauldron of plenty. On the Tree he is Chesed, where Tzadkiel, Righteousness-of-God, presides as the just king-father. Pour out for Zeus the host, raise a cup to Thor, give freely to a stranger expecting nothing: each is the one act of open-handed blessing, and its hermetic key is Cause and Effect — every cause has its effect.

Why it matters

He is so because life is meant to increase, not merely to endure, and there must be a power of yes to answer Saturn's no.
