First Pentacle of Saturn

What this is

The First Pentacle of Saturn is the chief of the three Saturnine seals given in the Key of Solomon, that grimoire of figured talismans copied through the late medieval and Renaissance manuscript tradition and finally edited from the British Library copies by S. L. MacGregor Mathers in 1889. The book gives each planet a set of pentacles, circular figures inscribed with divine names and verses, each cut for a single purpose. This one is the seal that, in the grimoire's own phrase, terrifies and constricts the spirits of the West.

What it governs

It governs command over the Saturnine spirits, those of the West and the heavy darkness, terrifying and constricting them into obedience. Its sphere is authority over the heavy, hidden Saturnine powers, the spirits of earth, stone, time, and the dark. It is the master-key of the Saturnine set, used to summon and hold the rest in order.

Its properties

It is figured in black on the day and hour of Saturn, its border carrying verses invoked against the rebellious spirits. The upright virtue of the seal is rightful command, the authority that compels by divine name rather than by force; its shadow is the temptation to command what one has not learned to govern in oneself. The pentacle teaches that authority over the deep powers begins with mastery of one's own depths.

Where else it appears

The First Pentacle of Saturn is the figured-talisman skin of the same Saturnine authority that the Olympic spirit Aratron holds in the Arbatel and the angel Cassiel holds over Saturday. Where Aratron commands the Saturn-provinces by his office and Cassiel by his rank, here the same command is condensed into an inscribed seal. The drawn figure, the named spirit, and the ruling angel are three doors onto one authority. Lay them together and the same dark command looks back.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

On The Day, the First Pentacle of Saturn appears as a tradition-face of Saturday, the day of Saturn, beside the planet itself, the angel Cassiel, and the planet's other daily faces. When it surfaces it colours the day with its single purpose, recorded in the old grimoire as one to terrifies and constricteth the spirits of the west. Read it not as a literal talisman to cut but as the day's invitation to that exact work under Saturn's hand: a pointer to the matter the day is shaped for, the door that stands open today.

Why it matters

It names the truth that the deepest powers answer to right authority, not to grasping, and that command is a discipline before it is a privilege. It matters because the day governed by Saturn asks you to take charge of what is heavy and hidden. It asks you to govern yourself first.
