Aratron

What this is

Aratron is the Olympic Spirit of Saturn, eldest of the seven governors named in the Arbatel of Magic, printed at Basel in 1575. The Arbatel divides the visible heaven among seven planetary intelligences and calls them the Olympic Spirits; Aratron rules the outermost and slowest sphere. The epithet the tradition hangs on him, Lord of Lead and Time, says everything about his nature: he is the governor of the heavy, the buried, and the patient.

What it governs

He presides over Saturn and over Saturday, and over the 49 provinces of heaven assigned to him in the old reckoning. His dominion is the slow, hidden side of the world: agriculture and the working of stone, alchemy, long life, secret treasure buried in the earth, and the granting of familiar spirits. He governs whatever endures by patience and whatever is found only by digging.

Its properties

His colour is black, his metal lead, his stone onyx, and his number runs to 49 kings, the square of his own planet's seven, with the tradition reckoning him 490 years. The Arbatel says he can turn any living thing to stone, teach the whole of alchemy and natural magic, render a person invisible, grant a familiar, and reconcile a person to the spirits of the earth. The upright face of Saturn is endurance, structure, the discipline that builds something lasting; the shadow is the same force gone cold, melancholy and the heart that buries its treasure and forgets where. To work with him is to take limit as a teacher rather than a punishment.

Where else it appears

Aratron is the Saturn-note worn in a Renaissance skin. The same note sounds as the angel Cassiel who rules Saturday, as the sephirah Binah at the head of the dark pillar, as Greek Kronos the old devourer and Roman Saturn of the sown field, as Hindu Shani the slow stern judge. Lead, onyx, the colour black, the three of Binah and the seven of the planet are not loose associations but the one Saturn looked at from different doors. Meet any of them and you have met the rest.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

On The Day, Aratron rises on Saturday as the tradition-face of Saturn, sharing that surface with the angel Cassiel, the bear, Pu-erh tea, and the Saturnine pentacles. When he is the face of your day, the day asks for patience rather than push: finish the slow thing, mend the foundation, sit with what you have been avoiding. Read him as permission to go deep and slow, and as a caution not to mistake hoarding for security.

Why it matters

Saturn is the boundary of the visible heaven, the last gate before the fixed stars, so its spirit teaches that every freedom is bought with a frame. He matters because the day eventually arrives for everyone when only patience will serve, and he is the friendly face of that day. He asks you to build something that will outlast the building of it.
