Four — The Builder

What this is

Four is the Tetrad, the square and the first solid — the number of the made world and the foundation on which any building stands. The Pythagoreans held it the root of all, for the Tetractys of ten dots is built from one, two, three and four. As the Builder it lays what will endure.

What it governs

Four governs structure, discipline and lasting work — law, order, loyalty, the framework that lets life be lived. On the Tree it sits at Chesed, Mercy, the open-handed kingship that gives force its lawful form. Its sphere is everything that must be built to last: the four elements, the four winds and directions, the four legs that steady a table, the rule of measure itself.

Its properties

Its virtue is discipline, structure, work, loyalty and the foundation — reliability, endurance, the patience that turns intention into something that holds weight. Its colours are the earthy greens and royal blue of Chesed, its image the square, the cube and the tetrahedron. The shadow is rigidity, dogmatism, overwork and resistance to change: order hardened into a cage, the builder who cannot bear that walls may need to move. Four asks you to build solidly without walling yourself in, and to finish one small concrete task today.

Where else it appears

The note sounds wherever the world is squared: the four elements of Empedocles, the four humours of the body, the four fixed signs at the corners of the year, the four rivers of Eden, the four-square New Jerusalem. The Emperor of the Tarot, throned and armoured, is this number embodied. One law of four, told in many tongues.

Where you meet it on the Oracle
