Holding Together (Hexagram 8)

What this is

Water on the earth, flowing into every hollow and joining: union, alliance, the holding together of many around one centre. Bi is Holding Together, the single strong line above five yielding ones who gather to it freely. Where the Army commanded, this figure unites by attraction. Hexagram 8, 比 (Bǐ): the upper trigram Kan (Water, ☵) over the lower trigram Kun (Earth, ☷); its six lines, read from the bottom upward, give the figure ䷇.

What it governs

It governs union, fellowship, and rightly-timed alliance. In the Oracle it presides over the day for joining with others, for finding or being the centre around which people cohere, for acting while the moment of union is open.

Its properties

Its image is water spreading over the land and seeking the low places, naturally drawing together. The virtue is the sincerity that makes union genuine and the timing that does not delay; its number the one centre to which five turn. The shadow is the union entered too late or for the wrong centre, the alliance built on calculation rather than trust, the one who hesitates until the circle has closed without them.

Where else it appears

The gathering around a true centre is the same wherever a fellowship forms. Bi is the body knit together that the Apostle describes, the brethren bound in a single chain of union, the planets held by one Sun. Water finding the hollows is the love that seeks out where it is needed and binds the scattered into one.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

It appears as the day's I Ching hexagram. Drawing Holding Together favours alliance and belonging: examine whether your union is sincere and timely, and do not wait so long that you are shut out. Read it as encouragement to join, to centre, and to commit while the door stands open. The Oracle's own note on this figure: “Water over Earth — union; the centre draws likeness.”

Why it matters

Holding Together matters because no one flourishes wholly alone, and the right alliance multiplies every strength. It asks you to be honest about the centre you give yourself to, and to overcome the pride or fear that makes you late to genuine union.
