Development (Hexagram 53)

What this is

A tree growing on the mountain, slowly, over years: gradual development by the proper stages. Jian is Development, sometimes Gradual Progress, the figure of the wild goose's measured flight and of growth that follows its natural order, the marriage rightly courted, the influence that ripens by degrees and so endures. Hexagram 53, 漸 (Jiàn): the upper trigram Xun (Wind, ☴) over the lower trigram Gen (Mountain, ☶); its six lines, read from the bottom upward, give the figure ䷴.

What it governs

It governs gradual progress, the patient observance of stages, and the development that lasts because it is not rushed. In the Oracle it presides over the day favourable for measured advance, when growth comes by following the proper order step by step, and the lasting good is built slowly.

Its properties

Its image is the tree on the mountain, growing gradually and so standing firm; the wise abide in dignity and virtue and improve the customs of the people slowly. The virtue is the patience to advance by the proper stages and the steadiness that makes gradual growth permanent; its element wood developing upon the mountain, its emblem the wild goose moving by stages. The shadow is the impatience that skips stages and so builds nothing lasting, the development forced out of its order, or the restlessness that abandons a slow good before it ripens.

Where else it appears

The growth that honours its stages is named wherever the lasting is built slowly. Jian is the seed that grows secretly, first the blade, then the ear, then the full corn, the soul's gradual ascent through the degrees, the wild goose flying in its appointed order, the alchemical work that cannot be hurried without spoiling. The tree on the mountain growing year by year is the development that endures precisely because it took its time.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

It surfaces as the day's I Ching hexagram. Drawing Development marks a day favourable for gradual, well-ordered progress: advance by the proper stages, do not skip steps, and trust that what grows slowly stands firm. Read it as a green light for patient, lasting growth rather than sudden leaps. The Oracle's own note on this figure: “Mountain beneath Wind — gradual progress; the tree on the mountain grows slowly.”

Why it matters

Development matters because the things that last, character, mastery, true bonds, grow by stages and cannot be hurried without being weakened. It asks you to honour the proper order of growth, to advance step by patient step, and to trust that the slow tree on the mountain outstands the one that shot up overnight.
