Gathering Together (Hexagram 45)

What this is

The lake risen above the earth, the waters gathering into one body: assembly, the drawing-together of people around a centre. Cui is Gathering Together, sometimes Massing, the figure of congregation, of communities and forces collected for a great common purpose. Hexagram 45, 萃 (Cuì): the upper trigram Dui (Lake, ☱) over the lower trigram Kun (Earth, ☷); its six lines, read from the bottom upward, give the figure ䷬.

What it governs

It governs assembly, congregation, and the uniting of many around a worthy centre. In the Oracle it presides over the day for gathering, for joining or leading a collective effort, for the kind of coming-together that requires a clear centre and a guard against the dangers of crowds.

Its properties

Its image is the lake gathered upon the earth, waters massing; the wise renew their weapons against the unforeseen, for where crowds gather, accidents may come. The virtue is the sincerity that gives a gathering its true centre and the foresight that guards against the disorder of crowds; its element the joyous lake collected upon the receptive earth. The shadow is the crowd massed without a worthy centre, the mob, the assembly turned to factional strife, or the leader who gathers people for vanity rather than purpose.

Where else it appears

The gathering around a sacred centre is named wherever a people assembles for a holy end. Cui is the congregation drawn together in one place, the tribes gathered to the ark, the lodge convened around its centre, the alchemical coagulation where scattered elements mass into one. The lake gathered on the earth is the community collected around a true purpose, powerful and, if rightly led, blessed.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

It surfaces as the day's I Ching hexagram. Drawing Gathering Together favours assembly and collective effort: join or lead a coming-together around a worthy centre, bring sincerity to the gathering, and stay alert to the disorder that crowds can breed. Read it as a day to unite many for a common good. The Oracle's own note on this figure: “Earth beneath Lake — gathering; assembled under the king of Wei.”

Why it matters

Gathering Together matters because great purposes need many gathered around one centre, yet a crowd without a true centre is only a mob waiting to scatter or turn. It asks you to bring sincerity to every assembly, to ensure the centre is worthy, and to guard, even in unity, against the accidents that gatherings invite.
