Duration (Hexagram 32)

What this is

Thunder above, wind below, movement and gentleness in lasting union: the figure of what endures. Heng is Duration, the marriage that lasts, the constancy that holds a course through time. Where Influence is the first attraction, Duration is the enduring bond it ripens into. Hexagram 32, 恆 (Héng): the upper trigram Zhen (Thunder, ☳) over the lower trigram Xun (Wind, ☴); its six lines, read from the bottom upward, give the figure ䷟.

What it governs

It governs duration, constancy, and the endurance that comes from holding to a steady course. In the Oracle it presides over the day that rewards perseverance in what is right and warns against restless change, the staying-power that completes long works.

Its properties

Its image is thunder and wind that always accompany each other, perpetual motion within an unchanging form, like the marriage that endures by renewing itself. The virtue is the constancy that perseveres without rigidity and renews itself within its bounds; its movement enduring continuity. The shadow is constancy turned to mere stubbornness, the rut mistaken for fidelity, or the restlessness that abandons a good course before it bears fruit.

Where else it appears

The enduring bond is named wherever faithfulness over time is honoured. Heng is the covenant kept through generations, the love that bears all things and never fails, the vow that holds, the alchemist's slow constant heat that must not waver for the work to come to term. Thunder and wind moving together always are the partners whose union lasts because each keeps its nature within the bond.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

It appears as the day's I Ching hexagram. Drawing Duration tells you the day rewards constancy and perseverance: hold steadily to your right course, renew your commitments rather than abandoning them, and resist the urge to restless change. Read it as a green light for staying the course in what matters. The Oracle's own note on this figure: “Wind beneath Thunder — duration; what endures changes constantly at its depth.”

Why it matters

Duration matters because the great things, marriages, vocations, masteries, are built not by impulse but by faithfulness over time. It asks you to persevere in what is right, to find the renewal that keeps constancy from hardening, and to trust that staying the course is itself a kind of strength.
