Oak

What this is

Oak (Quercus). The king of trees, sacred to every thunder-god, slow to grow and vast in age, struck by lightning more than any other and enduring still. Its acorn was carried for long life, its wood worked into the truest doors, its name the witness under which unbreakable oaths were sworn.

What it governs

Oak answers to Jupiter and the element of Earth. Its seat in the zodiac is Sagittarius, and its day is Thursday, when its virtue runs fullest. It strengthens with waxing moon and the full moon. In the old practice its office is plain: An acorn buried with an intention gives that intention a lifetime.

Its properties

In the Galenic reckoning oak is cool and dry, and that temperament is the whole key to its work. The part you take is the bark; acorn. Its working colour follows Jupiter, royal blue and purple; its metal is tin, its stones are amber, sapphire, its number 4, and on the Tree of Life it threads up to Chesed. It carries well on the body, kept in a pocket or a small sachet and it is gentle, safe to use as the practice describes.

Where else it appears

One enduring strength in many groves: Zeus's oak at Dodona rustled its leaves as an oracle; Thor's and Jupiter's lightning-tree took the bolt and lived; the Druid's daur, from which the very word Druid may come, made the oak-knowers. The strength that endures the thing meant to destroy it is honoured everywhere.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

In the Green Kingdom you meet Oak on Today's Herb, Angelic Herb, Today's Gathering, and Herb of the Hour. When it surfaces it counsels you toward its office: An acorn buried with an intention gives that intention a lifetime. As the Angelic Herb it stands under Sachiel; read its rising as that intelligence laying a hand on your day, with Jupiter's expansion and good fortune. As Today's Gathering it marks a plant to take up now, while waxing and full moon and the day are with it.

Why it matters

Oak endures. It teaches that real strength is measured in years and the deep root, not a single show of force, and that the keeping of an oath outlasts the swearers. It asks you to stand firm where you are tested, and to bend where bending keeps you whole.
