What this is

Tristitia is Sorrow, the bowed head and the downward motion. A single active point hangs beneath three doubled lines, an image that points down and inward. Agrippa names it sorrow, but also a depth that refuses false consolation; there is wisdom in it, not only grief.

What it governs

Tristitia answers to Saturn and to Aquarius, element Air. Through Saturn it rules grief, endurance, hidden work, and matters requiring depth, the long things that test patience. It does its proper work in the 8th, where mourning belongs, and the 12th, dissolving long sorrows by acknowledging them.

Its properties

Its colours are black and lead-grey, its metal lead, its number three, its stone onyx or obsidian. The virtue of Tristitia is endurance and depth, the hard wisdom that bad times teach, a steadiness in matters that genuinely need to be slow and grave. Its shadow is despair and stagnation, the sorrow that sinks rather than deepens; in the 1st of self it turns to self-sorrow, and in the 5th it smothers joy and creative play. It is unfavourable for lightness and yet, by the same logic, sound where a thing truly needs depth.

Where else it appears

The downward sorrow is the Saturnian note in many keys: Saturn the elder, lord of time and the long winter; Binah on the Tree, the great dark mother where joy is wrung into understanding; the line of obstruction where the way is blocked and the wise one turns inward. The grief of Saturn and the held breath of standstill are one. Tristitia carries the hard mercy every tradition knows, that some things deepen us only by weighing on us.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Tristitia shows on the Geomancy surface as the day's figure. When it rises, the Oracle marks a slow, heavy day, one for patience rather than push. Read it as unfavourable for joy, speed, or new ventures, and as favourable for matters that truly need to be grave and lasting, deep work done, endings endured honestly. It is the bowed-head answer to Laetitia's upward joy.

Why it matters

Tristitia is so because Saturn rules by limit, and limit is how a thing is given shape. The figure asks you to bear the heavy day without pretending it is light, and to find the depth only weight can dig. Not every sorrow is a misfortune; some are the soil other things grow from.
