Rubeus

What this is

Rubeus is the Red, the figure of blood, passion, and the overheated. One active point sits below a doubled head with two doubled lines under that: Albus turned upside down, and heavy with appetite. Agrippa calls it a red figure signifying vice, falsehood, and many passions; it is the surgical Mars, vitality or violence depending on the question, and the old masters warned the diviner to read it with care.

What it governs

Rubeus answers to Mars and to Scorpio, element Water. It rules conflict, passion, and forceful matters, and is favourable above all for removing obstacles, surgery, and cleansing by the root. It does its best work in the 6th of health, dissolving illness at its source, and the 12th, expelling enemies; it is deeply unfavourable for peace.

Its properties

Its colours are deep red and black, its metal iron, its stone garnet or bloodstone. The rare upright use of Rubeus is the clean cut that removes, cleanses, or destroys what must go. Its shadow is its whole common nature: rage, lust, lies, the passion that consumes the one who feels it. In the 1st of self it warns sharply of self-destruction. Where it appears, the tradition counsels caution and often reversal.

Where else it appears

The destroying fire is a note every tradition knows and most fear: the Tower struck and burning, the line of conflict and strife, the alchemist's poisonous fire that must be tamed before the work can go on. Rubeus and the Tower are the same lightning drawn as a figure of dots. The lesson runs across all of them, that heat ungoverned does not build but burns, and that the Mars-force which steels the warrior elsewhere here turns inward and devours.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Rubeus shows on the Geomancy surface as the day's figure. When it rises, the Oracle gives its sternest warning: the day carries heat that can scald and passion that can ruin. Read it as unfavourable in nearly everything, a day to slow down, hold your tongue, and refuse the drink or the dare; only surgical, obstacle-clearing matters take real benefit. It is the dark twin of Albus, passion against that figure's wisdom.

Why it matters

Rubeus is so because fire's lower nature is to consume, and Mars without governance turns from sword to wildfire. The figure asks you to recognise the heat in yourself before it acts for you, and to spend a hot day cooling rather than feeding the flame. The harm Rubeus warns of is most often self-inflicted.
