What this is

Populus is the People, the crowd, the undifferentiated mass. Four double points make a wholly passive figure, the mirror of Via: where Via is one straight road, Populus is a still pool that gives back whatever stands over it. Agrippa names it the congregation, as well of good as of evil, for it takes the quality of whatever figure stands beside it.

What it governs

Populus answers to the Moon, like Via, and to Cancer, element Water. It rules gatherings, public mood, consultation and reflection, anything that turns on numbers, and the receptive lunar nature that takes its colour from its company. It sits easiest in the 4th of home and the 5th of pleasure.

Its properties

Its colour is pale silver, its metal silver, its stone pearl, and its number is the multitude that has no single number. The strength of Populus is fellowship and safety in numbers, the steadiness of the crowd; its shadow is the loss of yourself in the mass, dithering, a figure with no view of its own. In the 10th of career it means stagnation in a public role. Being wholly passive, it neither helps nor harms alone but magnifies the figures around it.

Where else it appears

The reflecting pool is the same note in many skins. It is the full Moon's flat light showing the sky doubled in still water, the yielding principle of the Tao that endures by giving way, the line of standstill where much has gathered but nothing yet moves. A crowded room and a calm lake share one quality: both return what is put into them. To read Populus is to read the surface that mirrors you.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Populus shows on the Geomancy surface as the day's figure. When it rises, the day belongs to other people, not to your solitary will. The Oracle is telling you to gather opinion, move with the group, and watch the mood of those around you instead of forcing a private agenda. Read it as a day for consultation and reflection, weak for decisive action taken alone.

Why it matters

Populus is so because water at rest takes the shape of its vessel and the image of its sky. The figure asks you to see clearly where you end and the crowd begins, and to choose, with eyes open, whether to merge or hold your own line. The multitude has no direction until someone gives it one.
