What this is

Taphthartharath is the Spirit of Mercury, the trickster-force before any honesty has tamed it. He is not a liar by nature; he is quickness with no allegiance, the mind that can argue any side and cares for none. Left to itself, this is the cleverness that talks its way past the truth.

What it governs

He governs Mercury at its most unbound: deceit, cunning, theft, the silver tongue that gets what it wants by misdirection. This is the trickster who steals not for need but for the pleasure of the trick, the mind so fast it outruns its own conscience.

Its properties

He is the Mercurial force carried without the square's order, all quickness and no faith. The tradition is sober about him and never admires the con. The work is not to dull your wit but to bind it through Tiriel, the constructive Intelligence, so that cunning becomes eloquence and deceit becomes true knowing. Bound, the same quickness is wisdom and persuasion in a good cause; loosed, it is the lie that sounds better than the truth.

Where else it appears

Every tradition that honours the clever mind also distrusts the trickster, and gives that distrust a face: the cheat-god who steals the cattle and talks his way clear, the silver-tongued tempter, the cunning that is admired and watched in equal measure. The warning recurs because the danger does: the quickest mind is the one most able to fool itself first. Taphthartharath is that cunning named.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

On the Oracle the daemon is shown to warn, never to flatter, what the day's mercurial force becomes if left unshaped. When the Mercury reading carries Taphthartharath's weight, read it as a caution against deceit, against the clever shortcut that is really a theft, against persuading yourself of something untrue because the argument is neat. The remedy is the Intelligence above him: aim the wit at the truth and let it serve.

Why it matters

He matters because the tradition would not pretend cleverness is innocent. Naming the unbound trickster is how you learn to keep your own. Taphthartharath asks you to find where your quickness has slipped honesty's leash, and to put truth back in command of it.
