Hismael
What this is
Hismael is the Spirit of Jupiter, the raw force of appetite before any wisdom has measured it. He is not greed by nature; he is expansion with no brake, the drive for more that never asks how much is enough. Left to itself, this is abundance that swells until it bursts.
What it governs
He governs Jupiter at its most unbound: greed, excess, waste, the sprawl that consumes more than it can use. This is the appetite that mistakes accumulation for fulfilment, the growth that crowds out everything around it, the fortune kept and never shared.
Its properties
He is the Jovian force carried without the square's measure, all increase and no proportion. The tradition is sober about him, never praising the hoard. The work is not to deny abundance but to bind it through Iophiel, the constructive Intelligence, so that greed becomes generosity and excess becomes measured abundance. Bound, the same drive is healthy ambition and open-handed wealth; loosed, it is the bloat that calls itself success.
Where else it appears
Every tradition that honours abundance also warns of the glutton, and gives that warning a face: the king who turns everything he touches to useless gold, the dragon coiled on a hoard it cannot spend, the appetite that grows by feeding. The warning recurs because the danger does: the surest way to lose abundance is to worship it. Hismael is that appetite named.
Where you meet it on the Oracle
On the Oracle the daemon is shown to warn, never to tempt, what the day's jovial force becomes if left unshaped. When the Jupiter reading carries Hismael's weight, read it as a caution against greed, overreach, the growth that is really waste, the fortune clutched and never given. The remedy is the Intelligence above him: measure the increase, share the abundance, and let enough be enough.
Why it matters
He matters because the tradition would not pretend abundance is safe. Naming the unbound appetite is how you learn to satisfy it well. Hismael asks you to find where your wanting has lost its measure, and to put a wisdom over it before the hoard outgrows the joy.
