Waxing Moon

What this is

The Waxing Moon is the building light, the whole arc from the first thin crescent in the west through the half-lit quarter to the all-but-full gibbous. The Moon is pulling away from the Sun and gathering brightness night by night. What was a private seed at the dark of the month is now a green shoot that needs planting, tending, and refining.

What it governs

This phase governs growth, building, and gathering momentum — the middle work of any cycle. It moves through three moods the old reckoning names: the crescent's planting (small, public, concrete steps), the first quarter's friction (the first real resistance, the wall that was always part of the work), and the gibbous refinement (the detail work nobody sees, where what goes wrong at the Full Moon usually went wrong first). Its guidance: take the visible step, push against the wall, and tend the last unfinished eighth.

Its properties

Its virtue is constancy and the willingness to do the unglamorous daily feeding that turns a seed into a stand of grain; the friction it brings is not a warning but the grit that makes the work real. Its shadow is overreach — piling on more than the young thing can carry — or rushing the final refinement and paying for it at the peak. The light is increasing, which is why the old craft favours this phase for any work of increase: drawing toward you, growing, strengthening. Read it as the season of effort, when showing up is itself rewarded.

Where else it appears

The same swelling appears under many names. It is the alchemist's slow labour between the blackening and the whitening; the flowering growth-cards of the Tarot; the spring tide of sap rising in the stem; the magician building, brick by patient brick, what the Fool only dared to begin. Folk-craft everywhere times its workings of increase to the rising light, trusting that the cosmos itself is, just now, increasing.
