What this is

Water is the receptive, dissolving principle: cold and moist, the element that takes the shape of whatever holds it and quietly wears down whatever resists. It is feeling before it finds words, the memory that surfaces unasked, the tide that knows the Moon without being told. Where Fire converts, Water absorbs; it is the deep that remembers.

What it governs

Water rules emotion, intuition, memory, and the depths of feeling. In the Oracle's scheme it carries the phlegmatic temperament, the suit of Cups (the playing-card Hearts, ♥), and the watery triplicity — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Among the planets it answers to the Moon and to Venus, and in a life it presides over love and grief, dreams, the unconscious, and the bonds of kin.

Its properties

Its qualities are cold and moist: it cools the fever and softens the hard thing, and left to itself it stagnates. Water keeps the colours blue and silver-grey, the soft metal silver, the stone moonstone or pearl, and the number two — the first reflection, the first division. Upright it is compassion and intuition, the courage to feel; its shadow is the phlegmatic fault: drowning in sentiment, clinging, self-pity, the feeling that floods its banks and washes out the will.

Water rises on the Golden Thread when your Cups, your watery signs, and a Moon or Venus hour gather in the day's weave. A Water-dominant reading turns inward and tender; it favours listening over arguing, healing over building, and trusting the feeling that arrives before the reason does.
