What this is

Fire is the active, expansive principle of the four elements: hot and dry, the spark that leaps before there is anything to leap toward. It is will in its rawest form, the yes that arrives ahead of the plan. Where the other three elements receive or hold or carry, Fire converts; nothing it touches stays unchanged.

What it governs

Fire rules will, drive, courage, and the first spark of inspiration. In the Oracle's own scheme it carries the choleric temperament, the suit of Wands in the Tarot (the playing-card Clubs, ♣), and the fiery triplicity of the zodiac — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Among the planets its heat answers to Mars and the Sun, and in a life it presides over ambition, ardour, faith, and the appetite to begin.

Its properties

Its qualities are hot and dry: it warms and animates, and pushed too far it parches and scorches. Fire keeps the colour red, the hot metal iron, the stone garnet or ruby, and the number one — the unsplit beginning. Upright it is the virtue of courage and generous vision, the heat that lights others without dimming itself. Its shadow is the choleric fault: anger that burns the hand that holds it, impatience, the will that flares bright and forgets to finish, vanity worn as vitality.

Where else it appears

The same heat answers to many names. The choleric humour of the old physicians, yellow bile and high summer; the green-tipped Wands of the Tarot; Aries the ram charging the year's first gate; the planet Mars and the Hebrew letter Shin, the triple tongue of flame; the Pitta of the Ayurvedic body. Lay them side by side and one principle shows through every skin — the converting power that turns what could be into what is.

Fire shows on the Golden Thread of your daily reading, in the weave of your drawn cards, signs, and runes. When Wands gather beside a Mars or Sun hour beside a fiery decan, the day leans choleric and asks for movement and a clean decision rather than long deliberation. Read a Fire-dominant day as permission to act and to open boldly, with the one quiet caution that fire spreads: aim it before you light it.

Why it matters
