A rolled scroll, partly unfurled, set at the head of the twenty-seventh folio. It is the emblem of the message, the decree, and the record that travels. Its verses speak of news, of contracts and writings, and of the word that carries weight when it is read aloud.

Its properties

Its colour is parchment-cream and seal-red; its number twenty-seven, three cubed; its form the roll that holds the word until it is unfurled. The quality is communication, the weight of the written and witnessed word. In shadow it is the contract with a hidden clause, the decree that binds unfairly, the message twisted between sending and reading.

Where else it appears

The same note is the herald's scroll unrolled before the people; the sealed decree carried by the king's messenger; the scroll the prophet was told to eat, the word taken into the body; the unrolled testament read at the reckoning. One scroll, many hands carrying the same word.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

It surfaces as the Folio of the Day and as a closing folio, and it is the natural folio for questions of an intended journey, of news, and of writings and agreements. When it heads your day, read the document twice and send the word plainly; the day favours the clear message and punishes the careless one. In a reading it answers with news arriving and counsels you to weigh what is written before you act or sign.

Why it matters

It stands twenty-seventh because so much of fate is settled by the written and spoken word, and the Scroll is the oracle's emblem of the message that binds. It asks you to weigh the words you receive and the words you set your seal to.
