What this is

A camp of tents pitched in order, set at the head of the twenty-second folio. It is the emblem of the temporary halt, of shelter on the march, and of strength gathered for a coming move. Its verses speak of rest before action, of company on the road, and of the staging-ground.

Its properties

Its colour is canvas-grey and field-green; its number twenty-two, the full count of the paths; its setting the open ground between one place and the next. The quality is readiness, the wisdom of resting and ordering before the push. In shadow it is the camp that becomes a habit, the halt mistaken for the destination, strength gathered and never spent.

Where else it appears

The same note is the wilderness camp pitched around the tent of meeting, order kept on the long march; the army mustered before the campaign; the caravanserai where travellers gather before the next stage; the resting-place the pilgrim keeps that is not yet home. One encampment, many marches pausing in it.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

It surfaces as the Folio of the Day and as a closing folio, and it is the natural folio for questions of travel, of journeys planned, and of whether to move or to wait. When it heads your day, rest and ready yourself rather than charging on; the day favours the well-ordered halt over the exhausted push. In a reading it counsels that this is a staging-point, not the end, and asks you to gather strength for what comes next.

Why it matters

It stands twenty-second because no journey is one unbroken march, and the Encampment is the oracle's emblem of the rest that makes the next move possible. It asks you to pause and order yourself before you press on.
