Death's Head

What this is

A bare skull, set at the head of the tenth folio. It is the emblem of mortality and the plain warning, the vanity of the world and the certainty of the end. Its verses are the most sobering of all, honest to the bone.

What it governs

Presides over mortality, warning, the end, and the vanity of worldly things. Folio 10. It belongs to Saturn's deepest province, the bottom of every reckoning.

Its properties

Its colour is bone-white and the black of the socket; its number ten, the completed count brought to its close; its metal lead. The quality is sober truth, the clarity that comes from looking the end in the face. In shadow it is despair, fatalism, the warning taken as a curse rather than as counsel to live well now.

Where else it appears

The same note is the memento mori the monks kept on the desk; the skull at the philosopher's elbow in every old portrait; Kali's garland of heads, mortality worn as ornament; the Death card stripped to the bare bone of it. One skull, grinning in many tongues.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

It surfaces as the Folio of the Day and as a closing folio. When it heads your day, take it as a clearing wind: it asks you to drop the petty and attend to what would matter if your time were short. In a reading it sobers an answer and strips the matter to essentials, yet it is counsel, not condemnation. Read it as the world reminding you to live.

Why it matters

It stands tenth because the oracle that hides death from you cannot help you live. The Death's Head asks you to let the certainty of the end sharpen, not poison, the way you spend the day in front of you.
