Anchor

What this is

A ship's anchor, set at the head of the sixteenth folio. It is the emblem of hope held fast, of steadiness through storm, and of the safe return. Its verses speak of security, the one who comes home, and the thing that holds when all else drifts.

What it governs

Presides over hope, steadfastness, safe return, and security. Folio 16. It belongs to the harbour and the steadying waters rather than to any single sphere.

Its properties

Its colour is sea-green and steady grey; its metal iron; its number sixteen, four-square doubled. The quality is constancy, the patience of one who is moored through the storm. In shadow it is inertia, the anchor that should have been raised long ago, security clung to past its usefulness.

Where else it appears

The same note is the anchor cut into the catacomb walls as the early sign of hope, the cross half-hidden in its shape; Yesod's foundation steadying the astral tide; the hope the Greeks made the last gift left in the jar; the steadfast Star's earthly cousin. One hold against the current.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

It surfaces as the Folio of the Day and as a closing folio, and it is the natural folio for questions of a stranger's return, of absent friends, and of security. When it heads your day, hold your position; the day rewards steadiness over scrambling, and what you fear losing is more secure than it feels. In a reading it counsels that the absent will return and the shaken thing will hold. Stay moored.

Why it matters

It stands sixteenth because hope needs a body, not only a light, and the Anchor gives hope something to grip. It asks you to keep faith with the slow, holding things when the fast ones tempt you away.
