Sandalphon

What this is

Sandalphon is the archangel of Malkuth, the Kingdom — the angel at the foot of the Tree, as Metatron stands at its crown. The legend, which is midrash rather than scripture, makes him the prophet Elijah, taken up in the fiery chariot and there made an angel. He is the presence that makes a temple floor a temple floor.

What it governs

He governs the tenth sphere and all that is in it: the body, the soil, work, the senses, the finished thing rather than the intention. He keeps no day and no planetary hour, because Malkuth is given not to a planet but to the four elements and the Earth. Not every scheme seats him there — some put Uriel at Malkuth, or Metatron at both ends of the Tree.

Its properties

His number is ten, the full descent, one returned to the realm of completed form. His colours are Malkuth’s quartered earth-tones — citrine, olive, russet and black — and his stone is rock crystal. The Talmud sets him behind the chariot, weaving the prayers of Israel into crowns: the lowest angel given the most patient work. The four Tens answer to him rather than a trump. His upright virtue is grounding, the power to make a thing real and keep it; his shadow is the same power sunk, matter loved for itself and the kingdom mistaken for the whole world.

Where else it appears

The same note is struck wherever the divine is said to reach all the way to the ground. He is the doorkeeper of the Shekhinah, the indwelling glory that goes into exile with the people; the genius loci of a Roman threshold; the earth-spirit a Shinto shrine names before anything is built on the site. The presence that makes ground holy has been called an angel, a goddess and a place. They are one claim in three grammars.

Where you meet it on the Oracle

Like Uriel he is absent from the Day’s planetary trinity, having no planet to be called by. You meet him instead through Malkuth on the Tree of Life shelf, whose archangel he is; through the suit of Pentacles, which rests there; and in the Animal Kingdom, where the Raven is his creature. When his note is the one you need, stop planning and finish something — put the last coat on it, and let it dry.

Why it matters

He matters because a tradition that only names the heights has nowhere to put its results, and the Kingdom is where every higher current is finally paid out or lost. He asks one thing: name the thing you have almost finished, and go and finish it.
