What this is

The wolf is the totem-creature set over Monday in this calendar of beasts, named here the Teacher and Pathfinder of New Ways. It is the wild that still answers to loyalty, the animal nearest to the dog and yet wholly free, hunting in a bonded pack under a leader. In folklore it is at once the feared raider and the wise guide.

What it governs

It presides over Monday, sharing the Moon's qualities seen in animal form: the pack bound by feeling, the pathfinder who scents the way, the teacher of the new track. Its domain is the trail through unknown country and the loyalty that holds a company together. It governs the day's call to find the way and to keep faith with those who run beside you.

Its properties

Its colour is the grey-silver of its coat under the moon, its number tied to the pack rather than the solitary. The upright virtue of the wolf is loyal pathfinding, the strength that serves the whole and finds the track for others; its shadow is the lone predator, the appetite that hunts only for itself, the leader who becomes a tyrant. The wolf teaches that the freest creature still chooses to belong, and that the one who finds the new way carries the pack with it.

Where else it appears

The wolf is the pathfinding teacher in fur, the same note that sounds in the wolf-guides of many a shamanic tradition, in the Roman she-wolf who fostered the founders of the city, in Norse legend where wolves run beside and chase the moon and the sun. Its loyalty to the pack echoes the lunar rule over the bonds of feeling and belonging. Place them together and the same loyal guiding instinct looks back.
