What this is

The eagle is the totem-creature set over Thursday, named here the Illumined Mind and Spirit Messenger. It is the great bird that flies highest of all, said in the old lore to gaze unblinking into the sun. Where the hawk scouts the field, the eagle rises above it entirely, the king of the air and the carrier of the soul toward the heights.

What it governs

It presides over Thursday, sharing the qualities of Jupiter in winged form: the high noble view, the expansive flight, the rise toward illumination. Its domain is the upper air and the long sight that takes in the whole, the magnanimity of the one who flies above the quarrels of the ground. It governs the day's call to rise, to take the larger view, and to carry the spirit higher.

Its properties

Its colour is the gold-brown of its plumage and the royal blue of Jupiter, its number tied to the heights it commands. The upright virtue of the eagle is the illumined view, the noble expansiveness that sees the whole and judges generously; its shadow is the pride of the heights, the disdain that looks down on what it has flown above. The eagle teaches that the higher you rise the wider you should see, and that true elevation is generous rather than aloof.

The eagle is the Jovian king of the air in feather, the same note that sounds in the eagle of Zeus and Jupiter that carries the thunderbolt, in the eagle as the emblem of empire and high office, in the eagle that bears the soul to heaven in many a vision. Its rise toward the sun echoes the Jupiter-force of elevation and illumination, the lawful rise to high place. Place them together and the same noble height looks back.
