How a Chart Is Cast

You know the zodiac already: it’s that band of constellations the Sun appears to travel through, split into twelve thirty-degree sections. That’s your map. This chapter is about how the Oracle actually works — how it figures out where everything stood the moment you were born, and all the small decisions that sit between the sky and the chart you get. There are more of them than most people realize, and each one changes what you see.
Start with the real question. A birth chart claims to show where the Sun, Moon and planets were, as seen from your location, at the exact minute you arrived. Every word there is work. Where they were comes from tables of numbers based on the laws of motion. From your location means the answer is different for someone in Lisbon and someone in Lima at the same second. At the exact minute means we have to turn a wall clock into a sky clock, and those two have never matched. None of this is mystical. It’s all arithmetic — and arithmetic that can be done well or badly.
Part One — The Three Clocks
The most useful thing to know about a chart is that it runs on three clocks at once. Mix them up and you’ll misread it.
The hour belongs to the Moon. In a single day almost nothing in the sky moves enough to see: Saturn shifts about two arcminutes (a tiny fraction of a degree), and Pluto barely half of that — thinner than the line that draws it. Two things do move. The Moon crosses roughly half a degree every hour, and the horizon spins a full circle, which means the twelve houses (the twelve sections of your day) rotate completely between waking and sleeping. So an hourly reading isn’t just a daily reading served more often. It’s specifically about the Moon and the angles — the points where the horizon and meridian (the line running north-south through the sky) cross your chart. This is exactly how the old election astrologers chose when to begin something.
The day belongs to the fast planets. Mercury, Venus, the Sun and Mars move enough between one morning and the next for the angles they make to tighten and break. This is what most people mean by a horoscope, and it’s the one that can honestly claim to be about today.
The season belongs to the slow ones. When Pluto stands opposite something in your chart it stays there for two years. Put that in a daily reading and you’d write the same sentence three hundred mornings running — that’s how a reading stops being read. A slow transit doesn’t want a day; it wants a window — the date it came into range, the dates it peaked, and the date it let go.
That last point deserves its own note, because it surprises people. A slow planet doesn’t cross a degree once. It goes forward over it, then Earth overtakes it and it looks like it’s going backward, and it crosses again; then it turns and crosses a third time. Most slow contacts therefore peak three times across a year or more, and the tradition reads those three passes as a beginning, a rethinking and a settling. The Oracle names all three dates and tells you which one you’re living in.
Part Two — Turning a Clock into a Sky
The hardest part of casting an accurate chart for a date in the past isn’t the planets. It’s the time.
Civil time is tied to Earth’s rotation, and Earth isn’t a good clock. It wobbles, the tides drag it, and it’s been slowing for as long as anyone has measured. The even scale that the position tables are written against is called Terrestrial Time, and the gap between the two is called delta-T. Right now it’s about sixty-nine seconds. In 1600 it was two minutes. By the year 1000 it was twenty-six minutes, and in the centuries before Christ it runs to hours.
Twenty-six minutes sounds like nothing. For the Moon it’s a quarter of a degree; for a chart cast in ancient times it can be most of a sign. Any program that feeds the wall clock straight to the position tables will produce a chart for the wrong moment, and it will do so silently — nothing about the answer looks wrong. The Oracle corrects for it: from 1972 onward the correction is known exactly from the leap-second record, and before that it comes from the observed record that astronomers built from eclipse timings and occultations going back to the 1600s.
Four smaller corrections follow, and they’re worth naming because they’re the difference between where a body is and where it appears.
Light takes time to arrive. You don’t see the Sun where it is; you see it where it was eight minutes ago, and Pluto where it was five hours ago. Earth’s own motion tilts the view, the way rain slants when you run through it — this is called aberration, and it shifts everything by up to twenty arcseconds. The Sun’s gravity bends the light that passes near it, by a small but real amount. And the biggest of the four: you’re not standing at the centre of Earth. For the Moon, the difference between the view from the centre and the view from the surface reaches a full degree — enough on its own to move a Moon into the next sign. The Oracle applies all four.

Part Three — Two Zodiacs
Now comes the choice that surprises people most, and the one this book owes you straight.
The signs were named after the constellations behind them, and when they were named the two lined up. They don’t anymore. Earth’s axis wobbles like a spinning top — one full turn in about twenty-six thousand years — and this drags the spring equinox slowly backward through the stars. It’s been doing this for two thousand years, and now the two have drifted about twenty-four degrees apart — almost a whole sign.
That leaves a fork, and both paths have been walked for centuries.
The tropical zodiac keeps the equinox as its zero point. It’s a zodiac of seasons: the first degree of Aries is the moment spring begins, wherever the stars have got to. Western astrology has used it since Ptolemy, and it’s the Oracle’s default.
The sidereal zodiac keeps the stars as its zero point. It’s a zodiac of places in the sky, and it’s what Indian astrology has always used. The gap between the two is called the ayanamsa, and choosing a sidereal chart usually moves your Sun back into the sign before the one you grew up with.
Neither is wrong. They answer different questions — one asks where the Sun is in the year, the other asks where it is against the fixed stars — and the argument between their followers is old enough to have its own library. What matters practically is that a sidereal chart is the same sky, read from a different starting point. Every angle between two planets stays the same, because an angle is a difference and a difference survives a common shift. Every house placement stays the same, for the same reason. Only the sign changes, and the sign is what you notice.
There’s more than one sidereal zodiac, because there’s more than one opinion about where the stars begin. Some are fixed by decree at a chosen date. Some are fixed by naming the year the two zodiacs last agreed — a single date, after which precession does the rest, and the Sassanian one names an equinox in the year 564. The most interesting are fixed by a star. The Chitrapaksha zodiac, which underlies the Lahiri ayanamsa used across India, is defined as the one that puts Spica at exactly one hundred and eighty degrees. That’s a definition the Oracle can work out rather than look up: it finds Spica, and the zodiac follows.

Part Four — Cutting the Wheel Into Houses
The signs divide the sky. The houses divide your day — and they’re the part of a chart that needs your birth time, because they turn with the horizon and go all the way round in twenty-four hours. Four minutes of clock error moves them by a degree. This is why the Oracle keeps asking for the hour: without it there are no houses, no rising sign, and a Moon that could be anywhere in half a sign.
The disagreement here isn’t about what the houses mean but about how to cut them, and it’s genuinely unresolved after two thousand years. Whole Sign gives each sign a house entire — the oldest method and the simplest. Equal measures twelve equal thirty-degree slices from the rising degree. Porphyry divides the space between the angles into thirds. Placidus, the most widely used today, divides by time rather than space — it asks how long a degree takes to climb, and cuts that into thirds. Regiomontanus divides the celestial equator; Campanus divides the circle that runs from due east through the point overhead; Alcabitius divides the rising degree’s own arc into thirds. Koch works from the clock rather than from any circle: it asks when the degree now standing overhead was itself rising, and cuts that stretch of time into three.
Two honest notes belong here. The first is that the time-based systems break down near the poles. Above about sixty-six degrees of latitude some degrees of the zodiac never rise at all, and a system that divides the time a degree spends above the horizon has nothing to divide. Rather than print nonsense, the Oracle falls back to Whole Sign there and says that it has done so. The second is that the choice matters most for anything near a cusp (the boundary between houses), and least for anything in the middle of a house — which is a good reason not to lose sleep over it.
Part Five — The Fixed Stars
Everything so far has been about the seven wanderers and the three moderns. Behind them stand the stars that don’t wander, and they’re older in this tradition than any of it.
Agrippa gives fifteen of them in the second book of his Occult Philosophy — the Behenian stars — and to each he assigns a stone, a herb, a sigil and a suffumigation (a smoke offering), for the making of talismans under its influence. The Picatrix works the same ground from the Arabic side. Four of them are older still: Aldebaran, Regulus, Antares and Fomalhaut, the Royal Stars, which the Persians read as four watchers set over the quarters of heaven because they once stood near the solstices and equinoxes.
A star is read differently from a planet. It’s a pinpoint, not a body with a sphere of influence around it, so the tradition allows it barely a degree — and it’s read only when something sits on it. There’s no trine to Algol. A star falls on a place in your chart or it doesn’t, and if it does, that place carries the star’s character as a fixed quality rather than a passing weather.
They move, though slowly, and in two ways at once. Precession drags the whole frame; and each star has its own motion through space, which for a near one like Arcturus amounts to two arcseconds a year and more than a degree over the span of recorded history. A chart cast for the Renaissance that uses today’s star positions has them in the wrong place. The Oracle carries each star forward by its own measured motion.
Behind those nineteen stands a larger catalogue — everything down to third magnitude, which is about what a town sky shows and about what the old lists worked from, together with every star the tradition troubles to name however faint it is. That comes to a little over a hundred and sixty.
They’re carried, but they’re not all read, and the reason is worth saying plainly. A hundred and sixty stars at an orb of one degree works out at roughly one star every two degrees of zodiac. Read them all and almost every planet in almost every chart would collect a hit, and a reading that points at everything is pointing at nothing. So the ones that speak unasked are the nineteen the tradition names. The rest answer when they’re asked about.

Part Six — Eclipses, and the Points That Are Not Bodies
An eclipse isn’t a separate kind of event. It’s an ordinary New or Full Moon that happens to fall near one of the two places where the Moon’s tilted path crosses the Sun’s — the lunar nodes. Most New Moons pass above or below the Sun and nothing happens. When one lands close enough to a node, the three bodies line up in space as well as in longitude, and a shadow falls.
That’s why eclipses come in seasons roughly six months apart, and why they arrive in pairs a fortnight either side of each other: the Sun takes a couple of weeks to cross the node, and both a New and a Full Moon usually happen while it’s there.
What makes them worth a reading is that they’re the sharpest thing an astrologer can point at. An eclipse has a date, a degree and a kind, and either it lands on something in your chart or it doesn’t. The old rule is that an eclipse marks the year rather than the day — its effect is read as running for months either side of the date — which is a claim you can hold up against your own life afterward and check.
Alongside them sit the points that aren’t bodies at all, and which the Oracle works out from geometry rather than reading from a table. The nodes themselves — where the Moon’s orbit cuts the ecliptic (the Sun’s path), moving backward through the zodiac and completing a circuit in eighteen and a half years, which is the rhythm the eclipse seasons keep. Lilith, the far point of the Moon’s orbit, which comes in two versions that practitioners argue about: a smoothed mean one and a true one that wanders thirty degrees either side of it and occasionally goes backward. The Part of Fortune, an Arabic lot (a calculated point) measured by laying the Moon’s distance from the Sun off from the rising degree, and reversed at night. And Chiron, which is a real body — a small icy wanderer between Saturn and Uranus, discovered in 1977 and read since as the place where a wound and the knowledge of how to heal it sit in the same house.
Part Seven — What the Oracle Will Not Claim
A reference book earns its keep by being clear about the edges, so here are the ones that matter.
The positions are good. Measured against the ephemerides published by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Oracle’s planets agree to about five hundredths of an arcsecond across the modern era. A chart shows two decimal places of a degree, which is thirty-six arcseconds — so the numbers you’re shown are some seven hundred times finer than the thing they’re printed on. This isn’t a boast; it’s the reason no placement on the wheel needs a disclaimer.
Deep history is a different matter, and the honesty is worth spelling out. Going back before about 1750 the largest uncertainty stops being the planets and becomes the Moon, because the different modern reconstructions of Earth’s ancient rotation disagree with one another by a second or two of time. Cast a chart for the fifteenth century and every planet is solid while the Moon carries perhaps a quarter of a minute of arc of doubt. Go further still — thousands of years — and something subtler happens: the positions remain sound, but the models that define the coordinate frame itself have been carried well past the range they were fitted for. The Oracle marks such charts rather than pretending the precision is uniform.
There’s also a rule about what gets built at all. A house system or a zodiac goes in when it can be checked against a chart somebody else already published the answers for, and not before. Koch waited a long time on that rule: four separate attempts to reconstruct it from its description were written and all four were wrong, one of them by more than a hundred degrees. None of them looked wrong on the page. It went in the day a worked example turned up to settle it.
And one last thing, which isn’t a limitation but a choice. Everything above is measurement, and measurement is the easy half. What a placement means is not in the arithmetic and never was. The numbers are the same for the astrologer, the astronomer and the sceptic; the reading is what the tradition has made of them over four thousand years of people looking up and writing down what they saw underneath. This book takes the measuring seriously so that the reading has something honest to stand on. It doesn’t confuse one for the other.
